Rick and Morty executive producer has weighed in on season 7's unexpected final turn.
The latest chapter in the time-hopping adventures of Morty and his ever-belching scientist grandpa Rick ended on a surprising note with Mr Poopybutthole taking things into his own hands in a post-credits scene.
After swiping Rick's portal gun, the character used the weapon to murder and replace a much happier version of him in another universe. While Mr Poopybutthole thinks he'll never get caught, a knowing look from his wife, Mrs Poppybutthole suggests otherwise.

"I'm not sure where we're going to take that story just yet," executive producer Steve Levy told TVLine. "But it's clear that Mr. Poopy Butthole has a screw loose and is very unwell. He's not the hero we all thought he was at one point."
While it isn't clear what versions of Mr Poopybutthole fans will get to see in the next three seasons of the animated show, it seems this chapter allowed some of its protagonists to heal from some deep-rooted trauma and it may continue to do so moving forwards.

"Season 7 was really all about conjuring Diane, Rick finally being able to say her name again and everyone beginning to really heal in terms of all that," executive producer Scott Marder explained.
"Rick's going to continue growing and figuring out what life is like beyond this Braveheart revenge story that he's been on behind-the-scenes all this time."
Rick and Morty airs on Adult Swim in the US, and on E4 in the UK.
