With the release of Alien: Covenant earlier this year proving that Sir Ridley Scott can still put together a sci-fi horror film with the best of them, all attention is now on his second sequel of the year (this time as executive producer), Blade Runner 2049.

The cast are already making some pretty bold claims about the sequel, with Dave Bautista promising that it will "be better than the first film", so anticipation is already pretty high; but what happens after Blade Runner 2049?

Could the series develop into a new movie franchise, as is the done thing these days?

Well, in a word, yes – at least according to Ridley Scott himself.

In an interview with IGN to mark the original film's 35th anniversary, the director revealed that he has thought about expanding the world of Blade Runner, citing the success of George Lucas's Star Wars franchise.

"Yes," he began. "I think that, you know what, George has always proved that. Of course there's always something... and the way he's handled Star Wars has been spectacular."

He continued: "It's what I've been trying to do to really evolve Alien, because in those days I wasn't into making sequels, but now suddenly you realise, 'Well, that's stupid'. I'll use the word 'duh' again, right? You'd better get into sequels, duh. So that's in a way what I've been doing."

And it's safe to say Ridley has indeed got into sequels recently, so much so that the arrival of the second Blade Runner 2049 trailer back in May had fans thinking they'd spotted an Alien/Prometheus Easter egg, sparking theories that the two movie worlds could be part of a shared universe.

So, could they? IGN posed the question to Scott, and, well, he didn't do much to confirm or deny it really.

"Well, I think if Alien is in the air, Blade Runner is on Earth," he said. "And probably is a very good reason why you wanna leave Earth."

So, er, guess the jury's still out on that one.

Blade Runner 2049 stars Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Mackenzie Davis, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista and Jared Leto, with Harrison Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard from the original 1982 movie.

The film will be released on October 6.
