‘Ripley’ First Look: Andrew Scott Grifts Through Europe in ‘Talented Mr. Ripley’ Netflix Limited Series

Andrew Scott is a stranger no more.

The “All of Us Strangers” actor is transforming into the ultimate friend-of-a-friend to portray Tom Ripley in the Netflix limited series adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novels. Scott leads “Ripley” as the title character, with Dakota Johnson and Johnny Flynn co-starring. Steven Zaillian writes, directs, and executive produces the TV series adaptation, with lead star Scott producing.

The official synopsis for “Ripley” reads: “Tom Ripley (Scott), a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York, is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn) to return home. Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder. Dakota Fanning plays Marge Sherwood, an American living in Italy who suspects darker motives underlie Tom’s affability.”

“The Talented Mr. Ripley” was famously adapted into a film starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow in 1999. Alain Delon additionally played Tom Ripley in an adaptation. The themes were most recently showcased in “Saltburn” with Emerald Fennell referencing the film.

“Ripley” is co-produced by Showtime and Endemol Shine North America in association with Entertainment 360 and Filmrights. Writer-director Zaillian, who helms all eight episodes, executive produces along with Garrett Basch, Guymon Casady, Ben Forkner, Sharon Levy, and Philipp Keel of Diogenes.

Scott recently told GQ UK that he is looking to take on a “bit more dark” roles, however playing Tom Ripley “took a big toll” on the actor.

“I did find that character lonely-making,” Scott said. “I worked really hard and got quite sick, physically and mentally. It took a big toll on me. So when that was over, it made me think, how do I want to spend my life? I love acting, but I don’t necessarily think you should do it too much.”
