Riverdale is recasting one of its classic characters.

TV Line reports that the popular CW series will be replacing Ross Butler in the role of Reggie for its second season, as the actor has been forced to step down from the part due to scheduling issues.

Butler – who also appears in Netflix series 13 Reasons Why – was cast as Reggie for the show's first season, but it's said the character will be "virtually unrecognisable" next season.

"We love what Ross did with the role of Reggie but because of his commitments to other projects, we couldn't use him nearly as much as we would have liked," said creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

"We want more Reggie on our show and because Ross is unavailable to come back to Riverdale, we're looking for a new Reggie.

"Those are big shoes to fill, but we're confident we can find an actor who is as funny and sexy as Ross. And of course we all wish Ross the best."

This latest news makes the possibility of a second season of 13 Reasons Why more compelling, as Butler plays central character Zach Dempsey.

Butler's IMDb page is looking pretty quiet at the moment, so it's more than possible that his commitment to 13 Reasons Why's as-yet-unannounced second season is what's caused his Riverdale departure.

Riverdale came to The CW in the US earlier this year and was quickly picked up by Netflix so viewers in the UK could also watch.

Courtesy of TV producer supreme Greg Berlanti, the show sees Archie and the gang reimagined to solve the murder of Jason Blossom, the prodigal son of Riverdale's wealthiest family.

Riverdale airs on The CW in the US and Netflix in the UK.
