In typical Riverdale fashion, the latest episode of the fantastical teen drama has left fans utterly bemused by yet another morbid cliffhanger.

This time, however, it looks like the series may have killed off its main character, Archie Andrews – and no-one really knows what to think.

Despite surviving everything that's been thrown his way 'til now, 'No Exit' concluded in Canada, with a bloody and (at least) unconscious Archie after suffering a bear attack.

Yep, you heard us. A bear attack.

Unsurprisingly, fans wasted no time in letting their feelings known, with one writing on Twitter that there was "no way" Archie would be killed off by a grizzly.

"So Archie survived the black hood, Hiram lodge, juvenile detention, and the crazy farm girl.... JUST TO GET TAKEN OUT BY A BEAR," another shouted.

Not everyone is convinced they've seen the last of the Red Paladin, though, with one fan arguing that Archie's latest brush with death is needed for him to "get rid of his old self".

A resurrection is, of course, a likely conclusion. After all, Riverdale boss Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has promised fans that season three will be "practically biblical".

Another time jump, anyone?

Riverdale airs on The CW in the US and Netflix in the UK.
