Road closed and man in hospital seriously injured after crash

A key road has been closed and buses diverted after two cars crashed in Prescot.

The incident, which involved a Ford Fiesta and a Volkswagen Golf, took place on Warrington Road, near Pennington Gardens, just after 2.30pm. The male driver of the Ford suffered a serious leg injury and was taken to hospital, Merseyside Police said.

A portion of the road remained closed in both directions as of 4pm, with police warning the closure may be in place "for some time" as they wait for the damaged vehicles to be recovered.

In a post on Twitter, Arriva North West warned passengers that its Prescot service 10A will divert via Kemble Street and Prescot Bus station, omitting a section of Warrington Road due to a "police incident at Pennington Gardens." Prescot services 61 and 69 will also divert via Kemble Street, omitting Warrington Road and Prescot Bus Station.

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We attended an incident on Warrington Road, Prescot on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 25.

"Crews were alerted at 2.39pm and on scene at 2.42pm, with two fire engines attending. On arrival this was a two vehicle road traffic collision, both vehicles on all four wheels, both drivers out of their vehicles prior to Fire Service attendance.

"Crews administered first aid to one individual in advance of North West Ambulance Service arrival. Paramedics then checked both persons involved, with the driver of vehicle one not needing any further medical attention and the driver of vehicle two being conveyed to hospital."
