Robert Durst, the infamous millionare murderer who was taped in an apparent confession during a documentary, has died in prison.

Convicted killer Durst died as a California prisoner of natural causes on Monday at a hospital outside the prison where he had been serving life without parole, according to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The 78-year-old confessed in September to shooting his friend Susan Berman at point-blank range at her Los Angeles home in 2000.

He killed her to stop her talking about the disappearance of his wife, Kathie, who went missing in New York in 1982, and was legally declared dead decades later.

Durst, who had long been suspected of killing Kathie, was charged in November with second degree murder for his wife’s death.

The wealthy real estate heir was caught seemingly confessing in the six-part HBO documentary about himself, called ‘The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst’.

He was arrested for Berman's killing the night before the final episode, which closed with him mumbling to himself in a bathroom while still wearing a mic saying: "You're caught! What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course."

The show revealed new evidence connecting Durst to Berman’s killing.

This included a note sent to police which directed them to Berman’s house, with the word ‘Cadaver’ written on it.

In interviews, Durst told the documentary’s makers that whoever wrote the note would have been Berman’s killer, but denied writing it himself.

Later, in the run up to the trial, his defence conceded that he had in fact written it, which the prosecution said was tantamount to a confession.

At trial, LA prosecutors also told jurors Durst got away with murder in Texas after shooting his neighbour while hiding as a fugitive by pretending to be a mute woman after Berman’s killing.

Arrested for the killing, he went on the run and was captured after shoplifting a sandwich six weeks later in Pennsylvania.

Durst had been acquitted of murder in that case in 2003, after telling the authorities he shot Morris Black, who had discovered his identity, during a struggle.
