Sir Rod Stewart has quipped that he could give Boris Johnson some tips on making a comeback.

The Maggie May star, 78, spoke out after it was found that the former Prime Minister had misled parliament over COVID lockdown parties.

He admitted he was still a "bit of a fan" of Johnson and said that people knew what they were getting with him.

Asked for his thoughts during an interview on Sky News, the singer said: "I was and still am, a bit of a fan of Boris.

"I think he’s got wonderful charisma, but you know, you knew what you were getting with Boris, you know. It's not unusual.

"He's told a few porkies over the years, so I'm not surprised, he’s in big trouble now."

The singer, who is married to Loose Women star Penny Lancaster, joked to presenter Sarah-Jane Mee that he might be able to advise Johnson on his next steps.

Pondering how Johnson could come back from what has happened, he laughed: "Maybe he should talk to me, I have been making comebacks for years!"

People tuning in had a mixed response to the star's comments, with some criticising him on Twitter for saying that he was still a fan of Johnson.

"Oh Rod mate you've just alienated a lot of fans," one person tweeted.
