Man, 47, arrested after 48-year-old patient dies following fight at hospital

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a patient died following a fight at a hospital.

South Yorkshire Police said officers were called to Rotherham District General Hospital just before 9pm on Saturday evening (12 February) following repots from a member of staff that two patients had been fighting.

One of the patients, a 48-year-old man, died of his injuries in the early hours of Sunday morning, the force said.

In a statement, it said detectives have launched an investigation into the incident and a 47-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The force is now appealing for anyone with any information that could help its investigation to get in touch.

Its statement said: "Detectives have launched an investigation after a patient at Rotherham District General Hospital (RDGH) died following an assault yesterday evening (Saturday 12 February).

"Officers were called by a member of hospital staff at 8.54pm reporting that two patients had been fighting. One of the patients, a 48-year-old man, died of his injuries in the early hours of this morning.

"We are working closely with the hospital and will remain on scene this evening as we conduct enquiries.

"The man’s family has been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
