Piers Morgan was slammed on Twitter after he posted a sarcastic tweet in the wake of the arrival of the royal baby.

The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, was admitted to hospital on Monday morning after going into labour with her third child with husband Prince William.

The Good Morning Britain host appeared to play down the news on Twitter – much to the annoyance of his followers.

He tweeted: “Woman with 2 children goes into labour. I’M SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

His Twitter followers were unimpressed with his tweet, with many telling him to show respect to the Royal family.

One tweeted: “Not just any woman Piers!! Please show a little respect for our Royals. A new Prince or Princess is always exciting!!”

Another wrote: “I’m guessing you’re on about the new Royal baby!! Why the need for unnecessary sarcasm!!”

A third posted: “Ever given birth Piers? Then shut the f*** up.”

Kensington Palace this morning confirmed in a statement that Kate had gone into labour.

It said: “The Duchess of Cambridge has been admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital and is in the early stages of labour.

“The Duchess travelled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital with The Duke of Cambridge.”

Holly Willoughby was more than excited about the news and turned to a psychic banana to confirm whether the child will be a Prince or Princess after the Royal couple decided to refrain from finding out the gender.

Explaining the special fruit to co-host Phillip Schofield on This Morning she said: “It is important to ask the banana the most important question of the day: is she going to have a boy or a girl?

“If it’s a dot it’s a no if it’s a Y it’s a yes. Is she going to have a boy?”

Willoughby then sliced off the end of the fruit to reveal a ‘Y’.

Excited with her findings she said: “It’s a yes – I said that. It’s a boy!”

Alice and Arthur are the current favourites to be the child's chosen moniker.
