Royal Wedding UK’s most talked about on Facebook

The Royal Wedding and August riots dominated Facebook conversations this year, topping the social network’s most talked about in UK list.

More than a million users mentioned the wedding several times over the bank holiday weekend, with Kate Middleton and Prince William mentioned 236,000 times between them. David Beckham also pulled up activity on the site, mention more than 9,000 times in just 20 minutes during the ceremony.

Thousands also flocked to Facebook to discuss the August rioting across the UK, joining those posting on Twitter. The most surprising part of the findings is that ITV’s ‘The only way is Essex’ (TOWIE) drove more talk than the deaths of Libyan tyrant Muammar Gaddafi, terrorist Osama bin Laden and well-loved singer Amy Winehouse.

The show’s commonly-used term ‘Reem’ also made it to number ten in the list, behind music artists Jessie J, Ed Sheeran and multi-million pound computer game, ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’. Globally Osama bin Laden’s death was the most popular topic along with the death of Steve Jobs (fifth) and the Libyan conflict (ninth).
