RSPCA call for information after hedgehogs tortured in Frome

The RSPCA is asking anyone with information to contact them after tortured hedgehogs were found in Frome. Grisly images of dead hedgehogs have been circulating on social media after allegedly being found on Saturday, April 13 on Cuckoo Lane.

In one image, a hedgehog appears to have been hung from a barbed wire fence. In another, two dead hedgehogs were left on a car bonnet.

The photos upset people online, with one person commenting: "I'm lost for words. I despair how cruel some people can be."

Another person said: "Poor defenceless souls. I expect the person doing it has issues but this is no excuse".

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said: “We’re encouraging everyone to show kindness to wildlife. We share our space with a variety of wild animals and every kind of animal deserves our care and respect.

“We’re asking anyone with information about these hedgehogs or any other incidents of animal cruelty to share this with us by calling 0300 1234 999.”

Animal cruelty is a major concern in the UK, with the RSPCA's cruelty hotline receiving over a million calls in 2021. This means they received roughly 123 calls every hour, or 20,789 calls every week.

Hedgehogs are protected under the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act. They face many threats, including habitat loss, cars, pets, and harmful pesticides.
