Rutherglen park bandstand to be removed after being destroyed in deliberate blaze

The bandstand in a popular Rutherglen park is set to be removed after it was set alight and destroyed earlier this month .

The fire ripped the beloved spot apart on June 1 leaving nearby residents saddened.

Police Scotland launched an investigation into the incident and confirmed the blaze was being treated as wilful.

South Lanarkshire Council has confirmed that the bandstand will be dismantled and restoration work will be considered. It is unclear whether the bandstand will return to the park.

They posted on Facebook: "We have been advised by our contractors that the Overtoun Park Bandstand is unsafe following fire damage.

"The Bandstand will now be carefully dismantled and removed from its current position whilst consideration is given to restoration works."

One commenter wrote: "How sad. It stood for years, only to be destroyed overnight by mindless thug."

Another added: "These arsonists should be heavily punished. More CCTV cameras are needed."
