Ryan Porteous' challenge on Ilkay Gundogan had former Scotland defender and Aberdeen legend Willie Miller 'feeling a bit sick' after he was sent off against Germany.

The centre-half, following a VAR intervention, was shown a straight red card in Munich in the opening Euro 2024 clash for a rash, high tackle on the Man City midfielder after the latter forced Angus Gunn into a save to keep the score 2-0.

Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala put the hosts into a commanding lead before Kai Havertz would go on to net the resulting penalty from Porto's challenge, writes FootballScotland.

Miller blasted the tackle as fellow BBC Sportsound pundits also hit out at the tackle being a "leg-breaker", which left the Tartan Army devastated as they went on to suffer a brutal 5-1 defeat.

He said: "You're not going to win the ball with a tackle, you've got to try and block it. He should be trying to make himself big and be a block rather than a tackle.

"You're not going to win that ball with a tackle, try and block it. What he's actually done is combine the scissor challenge with an over the top into the ankle, it's horrendous and makes you feel a bit sick.

"Gundogan is lucky because his studs are in the ground and he's fortunate they bounce up when the tackle goes in, otherwise it's a snap. It's horrible. It's a horrible challenge."

Neil McCann also branded Porto "emotional", as he added: "Ryan Porteous is too emotional, he was my biggest fear tonight when I saw him on the pitch.

"I understand he gets ahead of Hanley because he maybe didn't show enough in the Finland game. But he's so over-emotional, so rash. That's a leg-breaker every day of the week, a red card and a penalty.

"He's absolutely killed us, the game's gone at 3-0 but structurally Germany were pulling us apart. They're such a good team."

And Leanne Crichton added: "It's horrible and it could've been really bad. But what I've got to say having watched it back, Angus Gunn tonight hasn't painted himself in glory.

"The first goal has got to be a stronger hand and the third it's in an area where Porteous has got to make a challenge. He gets the challenge completely wrong, it's a shocked, undoubtedly a red card.

"But the goalkeeper hasn't helped him out one bit by putting it back into the danger area."
