Ryan Reynolds has shared the first image of Hugh Jackman's highly-anticipated return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3.

We all thought Jackman had hung up the claws at the end of Logan until Reynolds teased last year that the mutant would be involved in Deadpool 3. Now, he's released a first-look image on Instagram that shows Deadpool and Wolverine side-by-side, with the caption: "Don't blink."

But what's this? Wolverine in his classic yellow outfit from the comics?

Indeed, after years of black leather and potshots at the colorful costumes across the X-Men films ("What would you prefer, yellow spandex?"), we finally to get to see Jackman's Wolverine in all his yellow glory.

Interestingly, the arms are yellow here, whereas they are usually exposed in the comics. There's also the typical extra details and linework live-action superhero costumes have nowadays, but overall, it's pretty darn accurate.

Reynolds appears next to Jackman's Wolverine as Wade Wilson, kitted out in his infamous red and black superhero suit. It certainly confirms there'll be no costume changes for the film's lead in the third instalment.

Welcome to Wrexham star Reynolds previously revealed how he was always gunning for a Deadpool and Wolverine double act. It was just a case of right timing.

"I always wanted Hugh to come back," Reynolds told Collider. "My first meeting with Kevin Feige when Disney bought Fox years ago was about doing a movie with the two of us, a Deadpool/Wolverine movie."

When Jackman "expressed interest in coming back", it was Reynolds who went back to Feige to pitch it one last time. And by all accounts, it didn't take much persuading.

"It's not like adding Hugh Jackman to a movie like this is a hard sell. It's an immediate and emphatic, unqualified yes."

The two Hollywood stars have been keeping details of the storyline and how their heroes will cross paths very much under wraps. But what we do know is that first impressions between the two aren't exactly good.

"[They] hate each other," Jackman told The Empire Film Podcast (via Deadline). "I’m just talking from my perspective, [Logan’s] frustrated by him – [he] wants to be a million miles away from him or wants to punch him in the head.

"Unfortunately, he can’t be a million miles away from him in this movie, so I’m probably going to punch him in the head a lot."

Deadpool 3 will be set in present day, ending previous confusion about how a Wolverine return was possible, after Jackman's hero died in Logan. The 2017 film was set in 2029, which means Wolverine is very much alive in the third Deadpool adventure.

Filming for Deadpool 3 began in late May, with actor Stefan Kapičić, who's reprising his role of mutant Colossus in the upcoming sequel, confirming production had started on his Instagram Stories.

Actress Morena Baccarin is also back to play Wade Wilson's partner Vanessa, with Leslie Uggams returning as unlikely wing-woman Blind Al.

Actor and Comedian Rob Delaney is additionally expected to come back as Deadpool's unlikely X-Force teammate Peter, alongside fellow X-Force member Negasonic Teenage Warhead (played by Brianna Hildebrand).

Deadpool and Deadpool 2 are streaming on Disney+. Deadpool 3, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has a release date of May 3, 2024.
