Information leaked online last night revealed major discounts were due to hit shelves this morning, with Dyson v6 Trigger cleaners set to drop in price from £149.99 to £50.
Bargain hunters seized on the news, with a number waiting outside branches of the supermarket from the early hours of Wednesday to get in on the deal.
But many of these customers were sent home empty handed, not knowing only “selected stores” were offering the electrical goods promotion.
Twitter was flooded with complaints from angry hopefuls, with multiple users insisting the whole thing had been a “scam”.
However, Sainsbury’s has confirmed the price drop was legitimate, “but only on selected Dyson and Gtech vacuums in selected stores.”
Well done, but try putting an end to the #FakeNews about the £50 Dyson sale - so many unnecessary journeys being made/wasted and increasing the carbon footprint!— Ella Stinnes (@ella_stinnes)October 16, 2019
The retailer’s press team told the Standard that only a “very small number” of units had been subject to the discount.
Other representatives apologised on social media for the “miscommunication”, explaining the promotion was “correct” but was part of limited sales to clear a “very small amount of residual stock.”
Hi Chris, please be assured the promotion is correct. It was a clearance sale of selected Dyson and Gtech vacuums which were only available in stores with remaining stock. Marc— Sainsbury's (@sainsburys)October 16, 2019
An anonymous source leaked the upcoming price-slash with the discount site Hotukdeals.com last night.
Alongside images of receipts confirming £50 Dyson purchases, the site has published names of stores found with stock so far: Cambridge, Irvine, Sainsbury’s Sury Basin Store in Kingston upon Thames, Bamber Bridge Preston, Darnley Store in Glasgow, Abbey Wood Holborn.
The Standard has contacted Sainsbury’s for a full list of participating branches and confirmation of the number of units subject to the sale.
