The bodies of Moors murderer Ian Brady and Manchester bomber Salman Abedi reportedly remain lying in the same morgue because undertakers are refusing to handle them.

The specific location, known to be somewhere in Greater Manchester, has not been revealed because of fears of reprisal attacks.

Brady’s body has been kept at the morgue after a coroner ruled it should not be released until assurances were granted that the child murderer’s ashes would not be scattered on Saddleworth Moor, where he buried most of his victims.

The notorious killer who murdered five children between 1963 and 1965, died at Ashworth secure hospital on 15 May at the age of 79.

No such assurances were required for suicide bomber Abedi, who killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena in May.

But many Muslim leaders have refused to give him a religious funeral.

“The pair of them are effectively in limbo," a source told the Daily Star: "Funeral directors don't want them. No crematorium wants to process them.

“In the meantime they are stuck in Monster Morgue. It may give some tiny crumb of comfort to relatives and friends [that] they are in anonymous purgatory.”

Meanwhile several Manchester mosques and Muslim leaders have said they will not help arrange a funeral for Abedi.

They include Manchester Central Mosque, which is one of the main organisers of Muslim funerals in the city.

“We don’t condone suicide bombing in any way, shape or form, so anyone who’s been involved with that, we’re not going to be supporting them,” said Irfan Chishti, an imam at the mosque, at the time.

“We cannot offer prayers over someone who has committed such an act.”
