Samsung has sold 30 million Galaxy S III handsets in the past five months, the Korean company has confirmed. Posting on its blog, Samsung said that more than 30 million units have sold since the launch of the handset in May 2012.

Putting this into context, the Samsung Galaxy S II sold 10 million units in the same duration in 2011, demonstrating impressive growth for Samsung to the top of the Android tree.

"Meeting this sales milestone in five months sets another record for Samsung, and we are extremely proud and yet motivated to continue to provide our customers with products they love," commented JK Shin, president and head of mobile at Samsung.

The Samsung Galaxy S III has just seen the roll-out of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, bringing it (almost) up to date with the best from Google.

If you're wondering how that compares to the big rivals at Cupertino, Apple confirmed in its Q4 results that it had shifted 26 million iPhones, so that's between 1 July and 30 September.
