Satellite Imagery Captures 'Thermal Signature' of Iceland Volcano Eruption

Satellite imagery shows the “thermal signature” of the volcanic fissure that erupted on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula on Monday, December 18.

These satellite images, posted to X by the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), were captured overnight into Tuesday.

The volcano’s eruption size “continues to diminish” and the “lava flow is estimated to be about one-quarter of what it was at the beginning of the eruption,” the Icelandic Met Office said on Tuesday. Credit: CIRA/CSU & NOAA via Storyful
