Satellite Imagery Shows Extensive Damage in Bakhmut, Ukraine

Newly released images from Maxar Technologies show extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure in the besieged city of Bakhmut in Ukraine.

Maxar released imagery from August 1, 2022, and contrasted it with images captured on January 3 and 4, 2023, to show damage in the eastern Donbas city.

The State Border Service of Ukraine said a counterattack had been launched by Ukrainian armed forces on January 4. Nine Russian soldiers were killed and approximately 20 wounded, the border service said. Ukrainian forces advanced some 300 meters, according to the service.

The city remained under intense shelling, according to the head of the Donetsk regional military administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko. Kyrylenko said two people were killed and three injured in the city on Wednesday. Kyrylenko also said in a TV appearance that some 60 percent of the city had been destroyed.
