Satellite Images Give Before and After View of Severe Russian Floods

Satellite imagery collected by Maxar shows the impact of the severe flooding in Russia’s Orenburg oblast this month.

Floodwater swept through the city of Orsk after seasonal flooding breached an embankment dam on April 5.

Days later, local authorities urged “absolutely everyone” living in riverside settlements to evacuate.

The images give aerial views over the Ural river (images 1-2) and its tributaries, as well as the levee (images 3-4) and riverside settlements (images 5-10), before and after the flooding.

On Thursday morning, April 11, 12,326 residential buildings and 19,474 household plots in Orenburg remained flooded, state news agency Tass reported, citing authorities. Credit: ©2024 Maxar Technologies via Storyful
