With the eighth Saw movie set to hit cinemas in time for Halloween, there's no better time to go right back to the beginning of the horror franchise.

In order to get producers interested in making the first Saw, writer Leigh Whannell and director James Wan created a short film to showcase their twisted concept, with Whannell starring in it like he did in the first movie.

It's the first outing for Saw's infamous reverse bear trap as Whannell's character recalls his encounter with Jigsaw to the police, with the short proving successful enough to get Lionsgate on board the full movie version.

The short was included on Saw's home release, but if you missed it first time around, here it is for your viewing pleasure.

Jigsaw's first trailer was unveiled last month and it was confirmed earlier this month that it will still contain all the "strong bloody violence" that fans of the series love, despite the directors saying it won't be "quite as vicious".

"We've got some pretty wild traps in the film – we don't shy away from the gore. It's such a perfect Halloween scarefest. It's perhaps not quite as vicious and more fun," teased co-director Peter Spierig.

The trailer also hinted that the possible main strand of the movie that will potentially follow five people as they fight to escape the killer's clutches.

Jigsaw is released in cinemas on October 27.
