I saw Hamilton at Birmingham Hippodrome and it completely blew me away

The first time I saw Hamilton was on television during Covid lockdown in 2020. It was available to stream on Disney+ and my mother in law invited us round (the social distancing rules had lessened to allow this) to her house for 'theatre night'. She even organised mock tickets and interval ice cream.

It was a great night, and I loved my initial experience of watching the multi-award winning musical on TV. But, oh my goodness, nothing - and I really mean nothing - compares to watching it for the very first time on stage.

I saw Hamilton tonight at Birmingham Hippodrome and it utterly blew me away. The theatre was more packed than I'd ever seen - I couldn't spot a single empty seat. And the rapturous applause, whoops and cheers after the first song came to a close showed just how long this audience had been waiting to see Lin-Manuel Miranda's show in the West Midlands.

The phenomenon of Hamilton is touring the UK for the very first time - and is at Birmingham Hippodrome now until August 31. Tickets are selling really fast, but the CEO and artistic director Jon Gilchrist assured me there were still plenty of seats available online. However, I honestly wouldn't wait for it... any musical fans should try and lock down their tickets now.

Hamilton is the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and helped shape the very foundations of the America we know today. The score blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway – the story of America then, as told by America now.

It's won 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, 7 Olivier Awards, the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.

So what's so amazing about this hyped-up musical? At one point it's all anyone was talking about. But now I can see why.

The music is incredible - it's what you'd expect considering Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the songs. He also helped write fellow musical In The Heights, and popular Disney film Encanto. Song highlights for me were 'Alexander Hamilton' - I absolutely loved this one before watching the performance on stage but there was something really special about seeing it performed live.

Shaq Taylor, who plays the leading role of Alexander Hamilton, was fantastic - he was funny, a talented actor and an incredible singer, rapper and hip-hop artist. I don't know how he did it, but when he was on stage I could only watch him.

'Wait for It' is also another favourite song of mine, performed powerfully by Sam Oladeinde who played Aaron Burr. The entire cast was amazingly talented, and I really admire how hard they must work to bring out multiple shows of Hamilton every day in Birmingham until the end of August.

I loved Maya Britto and Aisha Jawando , who played Eliza and Angelica - the Schuyler sisters. Their voices captured me entirely. And a special mention should also go out to Daniel Boys who played the comedic and spoilt King George - every time he even appeared on the stage the audience would start giggling.

Hamilton is one musical you shouldn't miss if you love the theatre. And if you don't go that often? Make Hamilton your first taste of stage musicals. It's an absolutely brilliant, epic production and will rightfully go down in history.

You can get your tickets from Birmingham Hippodrome here. The show runs in the city until August 31.
