How Scotland have fared in past meetings with Germany ahead of Euro 2024 opener
Friday night's Euro 2024 opener in Munich will be the eighth meeting between Scotland and Germany since the unification of the tournament’s host nation in 1990.
But despite the dire record against the Germans, it hasn't dimmed the hopes of a nation, or the thousands who have descended on Munich.
Steve Clarke's men will be eager to kickstart Group A with what would be a shock result, and if past fixtures are anything to go by, there is set to be no shortage of drama in Bavaria.

Scotland 0 Germany 2 (June 15, 1992)
In their first and only previous meeting at a European Championship, the Germans ended Scotland’s hopes of Euro 92 progression with a 2-0 victory in Norrkoping.
Andy Roxburgh’s Scots, who had lost their opening match in Sweden against the Netherlands, started brightly but Berti Vogts’ Germans went ahead in the 29th minute through Karl-Heinz Riedle before Stefan Effenberg scored a fortuitous second with a huge deflection off Maurice Malpas.
Scotland 0 Germany 1 (March 24, 1993)
This friendly at Ibrox, on one of the rare occasions Scotland wore their salmon pink top with purple pinstripes, is perhaps best remembered for a stunning overhead kick from Duncan Ferguson that was tipped over the bar by German keeper Andreas Kopke. Riedle’s 20th-minute goal ultimately proved decisive.

Germany 0 Scotland 1 (April 28, 1999)
Scotland’s only win over Germany came in a friendly in Bremen 25 years ago, midway through the Euro 2000 qualifying campaign.
Everton forward Don Hutchison marked his first start for Craig Brown’s side by scoring the only goal of the game in the second half.
Scotland 1 Germany 1 (June 7, 2003)
Vogts was appointed Scotland boss in February 2002 and found himself going up against his home nation in Euro 2004 qualifying.
Following a string of poor friendly performances, the Scots picked up a creditable point against a German side who had finished runners-up at the World Cup a year previously, with a second-half strike from Kenny Miller cancelling out Fredi Bobic’s header, keeping the two teams level on points at the top of the qualifying section.
Germany 2 Scotland 1 (September 10, 2003)
Three months after their Hampden meeting, Scotland were consigned to a Euro 2004 play-off after losing narrowly in Dortmund, sparking Christian Dailly’s memorable “f****** cheats” rant at the Germans while Vogts was being interviewed on television moments after the final whistle.
Goals from Bobic and Michael Ballack put the home side in front before Neil McCann hit back for Scotland, who had Maurice Ross sent off shortly afterwards.

Germany 2 Scotland 1 (September 7, 2014)
History repeated itself 11 years later as Gordon Strachan’s Scotland side lost 2-1 and had a man sent off in Dortmund in their opening Euro 2016 qualifier.
Thomas Muller scored a double for the freshly-crowned world champions either side of Ikechi Anya’s equaliser for the Scots, who had Charlie Mulgrew red-carded late on.
Scotland 2 Germany 3 (September 7, 2015)
Scotland’s hopes of earning a crack at a Euro 2016 play-off suffered a blow as they lost narrowly at home to Joachim Low’s side.
Muller again notched a double, with Ilkay Gundogan scoring the winner after the hosts had equalised twice through a Mats Hummels own goal and a James McArthur strike.
