Summery weather has given way for more doom and gloom, but nicer conditions are on the way - and on a weekend to boot.

Scots hoping for a bit of warmth and sun could be in store for some good weather. According to the Met Office, there are signs that conditions will become more settled and rising to above average temperatures during the course of next week.

Maps from WXCharts show the mercury could hit 20C on Friday July 12 and rising as high as 22C in Fife the following day, Saturday July 13. Hitting the midpoint of July, the warm spell is one of the few opportunities to bask in warmth this summer.

In the forecast for this week, Met Office weather presenter reports the cool, wet conditions will not let up in the coming days. Wednesday will be cloudy and drizzly, with a stronger jet stream arriving overnight, bringing more unsettled conditions.

On Thursday, there will be a 'fresher feel' in the air, but strong gusts up to 40mph, and potentially some thunderstorms. Friday will bring an interlude of dry weather, but a touch of sunshine.

Annie said: "Temperatures cooler in the north and west, only 14 and 15 degrees, but a little in the way of sunshine across northern areas compared to other days."

The Met Office's long range forecast for Saturday July 6 to Monday July 15 reads: "The coming weekend is likely to be rather cool and showery, particularly so on Saturday although the most frequent showers are likely to be reserved for the northwest of the country. Plenty of dry weather with sunny spells in-between the showers.

"Into the following week, further cloud and rain bearing weather systems are likely to move across the UK, accompanied by stronger winds at times in the west, continuing the recent changeable theme.

"However, there are tentative signs that following the early part of next week, conditions may begin to gradually turn a bit more settled, at least for a time. This particularly so across eastern parts, with temperatures more widely trending back up to average and then potentially above average as the week progresses."

The national forecaster's latest report indicates June 2024 was a dry, cool and sunny month compared to the UK's long-term average. However, northern Scotland recorded above average amounts. Rainfall reached 122mm (4.8 inches) - more than 32% its average for June.
