Scots on school holidays paying price for Rishi Sunak's election timing madness

Rishi Sunak was warned that holding a general election during the Scottish school holidays would be chaotic.

There is a reason the last UK general election to be held in July was in 1945 – and that was only held then because of the end of the World War II.

The decision to go for a July 4 vote shows absolute contempt for Scotland.

The Record said this at the time, as did SNP First Minister John Swinney. But this tone-deaf Tory Prime Minister refused to listen and ploughed on anyway.

Now delays sending postal ballots to Scots who will be on holiday before July 4 have stripped them of their democratic right.

Postal votes were brought in to allow people to cast their ballot when they are unable to get to a polling station.

Many folk knew they would be away, so prepared properly and put in their application in plenty of time.

But lots of them will not get an opportunity to vote because they haven’t received their pack as they go on holiday.

They are right to be furious.

This is one of the most important elections for decades. There is a serious opportunity to boot the Tories out and install a Labour government.

Many contests up and down the country will be extremely tight. So it is crucial everyone gets the chance to vote.

Something must be done to allow those who have not received their postal votes to cast a ballot.

Some councils have set up early polling stations to let people who have yet to receive a postal ballot vote early.

These need to be set up across Scotland so nobody loses their vital right to vote.

Stick with Labour

Stephen Flynn is an able politician who has impressed since becoming the SNP’s Westminster leader just over 18 months ago.

We share many of his views on child poverty and fixing the economy.

We have also been impressed by his direct style and ability to hold Rishi Sunak to account during Prime Minister’s Questions.

He thinks the Daily Record is wrong to back Labour and says it will do little to sort the problems that our country faces.

We respectfully disagree with him.

Now is the time to back Labour so we can get rid of this vile and corrupt Tory Government.

Come July 5, there are only two men who can be Prime Minister: Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer.

The Tories have trashed our economy and ruined our public services over the past 14 years. Our country is in a much worse state than when the Conservatives came to office in 2010.

So it is crucial that readers vote Labour to replace this awful government.
