You season 4's Ed Speleers talks hard Rhys scene

You season 4 part 2 spoilers follow.

Netflix's You star Ed Speleers admits that the torturing of Rhys Montrose was "one of the hardest" for him to shoot across season 4.

In it, his mysterious character is subjected to all kinds of dark antics by Penn Badgley's serial killer Joe Goldberg a couple of episodes ahead of the game-changing finale.

As for why Speleers (who Star Trek: Picard season 3 watchers will recognise, too) found this moment particularly challenging, he exclusively told Digital Spy that the sequential nature of production meant that the psychological turnaround was a bit too quick.

"I suppose that was one of the hardest scenes to shoot mainly because very quickly after that we shot the reappearance of Rhys," he began. "And having to prep both things, it was shot in the same day.

"I think one of the challenges with shooting a torture scene is that he doesn't say a great deal and he's just having to be... you know, having full-throttle Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg right in front of you is quite a menacing thing. Which allowed me to sort of play up to the scenario I suppose.

"I think you have to just give over yourself to the scenario more than anything else."

Speleers - who played the title role in 2006's fantasy Eragon, his first acting job - went on to elaborate: "The interesting thing is, there's only a few scenes where I actually play the real Rhys. So I have a better understanding of the manifestation of Rhys.

"So actually that was one of the bigger challenges was trying to understand who he really was. I had much more of a grip on this devil-on-the-shoulder character."

You seasons 1-4 are now streaming on Netflix in their entirety.
