Second Post-Mortem For Shot Indian Student

The body of murdered Indian student Anuj Bidve could be returned to his home country following a second post-mortem, police have said.

Speaking after meeting Mr Bidve's family in Pune, India, Chief Superintendent Ross Jackson, of Greater Manchester Police, said officers had been supporting them in "what must be one of the most difficult times in their lives".

"We met with Anuj's family last night for several house and were able to fill in some of the gaps in the understanding of events which led up to the tragic loss of Anuj," he said.

"Our role has been to meet with the family and explain the case so far."

He added that defence lawyers involved in the case had requested a second post-mortem, due to take place on Tuesday morning.

The coroner is then due to consider whether Mr Bidve's body could be released.

The family of the 23-year-old have said they will fly to the UK and then accompany Mr Bidve back to his home country.

Micro-electronics student Mr Bidve was shot in the head at close range in Salford on Boxing Day.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police flew out to visit his family following criticism from them over the way they initially handled the case.

Mr Bidve's father Subhash said they only learnt of their son's death after looking on the social networking site Facebook.

Meanwhile, the man accused of murdering Mr Bidve is due to appear at Manchester Crown Court.

Kiaran Stapleton, 20, from Ordsall, in Salford - who referred to himself as "Psycho Stapleton" when asked his name in front of magistrates on Monday - will appear via videolink.
