The Peak District is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, fascinating history and quaint villages. However, with its increasing popularity, finding tranquil spots for a weekend stroll away from the crowds can be challenging.

But if you know where to look, the Peaks are brimming with hidden treasures. Luckily, many highlights are under an hour's drive from Stoke-on-Trent.

One such gem is Waterfall Swallet, a beautiful water feature nestled in a wooded gorge and one of the Peak District's best-kept secrets. This picturesque spot is around an hour's drive from the Potteries and just 100 metres off Foolow Road, a main artery linking the villages of Eyam and Foolow in the Derbyshire portion of the UK's first national park.

Once you reach the waterfall, the sound of cascading water drowns out any noise from nearby traffic, making you feel miles away from civilisation. The area offers several stones and logs perfect for sitting down and enjoying a picnic, making it an ideal stopover on a longer walk.

It's worth noting that the waterfall appears more impressive after substantial rainfall. So while the typical British weather shouldn't pose a problem, it might be best to avoid this spot during a heatwave, reports Derbyshire Live.

To reach this hidden gem, you could park in a nearby layby which is just a five-minute stroll away. However, where's the adventure in that?

When we made our visit to the waterfall, we parked at Eyam on Hawkhill Road - postcode S32 5AD.

It's important to remember that whenever embarking on a hike in the Peak District, it's crucial to familiarise yourself with the route, ensure you have the right gear and clothing, and know who to contact in case of emergencies.

From the car park, one option is to walk along Main Road and onto Foolow Road for about a mile until you come across a turn off for Shepherds Flat Farm. Just past this turn off, where the pavement ends, there's a dirt track. Follow this track and you should spot a footpath veering down into a gorge.

You'll know you've found the right place when you hear the thunderous sounds of the waterfall. Getting into the gorge is less of a walk and more of a scramble down a muddy bank, so be sure to tread carefully.

Alternatively, you could take a stroll down Main Road and onto Tideswell Lane. Near the top of this lane, there's a public footpath leading towards Foolow.

This path, approximately two miles in length, will take you all the way to Foolow. From there, simply follow Foolow Road towards Eyam, passing by the picturesque Waterfall Swallet en route.

There are ample opportunities for photography and tranquil spots to sit back and enjoy a sandwich. After taking in the beauty of the waterfall, you can either retrace your steps or plan a different route to explore more of the Peak District.
