See Angus Cloud in One of His Final Roles in “Your Lucky Day”: He Had a 'Lovable Toughness,' Says Director (Exclusive)

In a clip from one of his last movies, Angus Cloud decides to make his own odds to earn a $156 million lottery ticket

Angus Cloud is a man with a dream in Your Lucky Day, one of the late actor’s last screen projects.

PEOPLE has an exclusive glimpse of the indie thriller from writer-director Daniel Brown, showing the twist of fate that kicks off its pulse-pounding action.

When a handful of people at a corner convenience store on Christmas Eve see one of them win the lottery — totaling $156 million — the down-on-his-luck Sterling (played by Cloud) decides to make his own odds and shoot his shot.

The clip shows Sterling perusing the store’s magazine section and suddenly realizing a ticket to the life of a millionaire is within his grasp. He proceeds to conspicuously obscure his face with a hoodie and tape, drawing the others’ attention.

What happens next, as Your Lucky Day's official synopsis and trailer reveal, is that the “dispute over a winning lottery ticket turns into a deadly hostage situation.”

The synopsis adds, “the witnesses must decide exactly how far they’ll go — and how much blood they’re willing to spill — for a cut of the $156 million.”

As Cloud’s character puts it in the trailer, “Nobody ever got rich without doing no crime.”

Spencer Garrett features as the lucky lottery winner, with Jessica Garza, Elliot Knight, Mousa Hussein Kraish, Sterling Beaumon and Jason O'Mara playing those witnesses, each chasing their own version of the American Dream.

Of matching Cloud with the character of Sterling, Brown tells PEOPLE that “there was the sense that they had a lovable toughness… You could see [he could make] a rash decision, but still really have a good human heart. And that felt like very much what Angus was all about.”

The 40-year-old Brown, who has directed music videos and commercials, makes his feature directorial debut with Your Lucky Day. He adapted the feature-length version from his hit 2010 short film of the same name and with the same basic premise of a lottery winning that becomes a holdup.

After seeing Cloud’s "soulful" performance as Fezco on season one of HBO’s Euphoria, Brown remembers, he jumped at the chance to showcase the actor’s talents in a leading role. “It was really nice to be able to feel like this was very much his movie.”

He adds that although filming took place over only 16 days in Los Angeles in late 2021, Cloud’s warm presence on set — and, of course, compelling quality on camera — made it an unforgettable experience. “I feel this incredible loss of someone who had so much more to do,” says Brown. “I would've loved to have seen him in more movies… I hope other people watch him and really appreciate what he could do.”

The film concludes with a tribute to Cloud: a message that reads "For Angus."

Your Lucky Day premiered in September at Fantastic Fest 2023. Well Go USA Entertainment is releasing the film in theaters Nov. 10 and on VOD Nov. 14.
