'All You See Is Smoke': Mountain Fire Sends Huge Cloud Over Bogota

Thick plumes of smoke drifted over Bogota, the capital of Colombia, as several forest fires were burning on the mountainside outside of the city into Thursday, January 25.

Footage filmed by Jorge Pardo on January 25 shows the smoke above the city. “There’s no clouds in the sky, all you see is smoke,” Pardo told Storyful.

President Gustavo Petro said he would be seeking international aid to help with the fires. Bogota’s Mayor Carlos Fernando Galan said he had requested help from government representatives of Spain, the US, and Chile.

In a press conference given on Wednesday evening, Galan said crews were working to contain five wildfires around the city. Credit: Jorge Pardo via Storyful
