Selena Gomez’s heartfelt shout-out to longtime friend Demi Lovato will have you in tears

Last night’s 2020 Grammys were a true emotional rollercoaster, from the delightful men-in-pink trend to Demi Lovato’s moving performance of her song “Anyone.” We’re still reeling from her “comeback” appearance, and we certainly weren’t the only ones rooting for Lovato as she powered through her emotional song. Right there with us (and basically all of Twitter) was Lovato’s longtime friend Selena Gomez, who took to Instagram Stories to show her support for Lovato’s epic performance.

“I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational and DESERVED this moment was. Demi I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery,” Gomez wrote in her Stories last night. She included an image of Lovato mid-performance, looking like a true goddess in her white Christian Siriano gown.

Lovato wrote the ballad—which she recently told Zane Lowe was “a cry for help”—just a few days before her drug overdose in 2018. Last night’s Grammys not only marked the song’s debut, but also Lovato’s “comeback” after taking a hiatus from live performances to focus on her recovery. The importance of the moment became clear early on in her performance, when Lovato became too choked up to continue and restarted the song from the top (and finished it off flawlessly).

Gomez’s was one of many voices in the outpouring of support for Lovato’s courageous performance, though their friendship, like any other, has had its share of ups and downs.

Gomez and Lovato met on the set of Barney and Friends when they were both just 7 years old, becoming close friends shortly thereafter. Although their friendship strained as teenagers, Gomez was among the first people to reach out to Lovato during the singer’s recovery from an eating disorder and self-harm in 2010, according to E! Online. And the ups and downs continued: In 2014, Lovato told Andy Cohen that they “changed and grew apart,” but Gomez again reached out to Lovato in the wake of her 2018 overdose.

If Gomez’s Instagram Story is any indication, it seems like the two are back on good terms, which we absolutely love to see. There’s really nothing like a heart-wrenching Grammy performance to show you who your real friends are.
