One of the two men hit by lightning and killed in the Brecon Beacons may have been struck because he was carrying a selfie stick.

Two men were killed and two injured during a thunderstorm, and sources close to the rescue have suggested that a selfie stick being carried by one of the victims may have been to blame for attracting the strike.

The victims have not yet been formally named. One man in his 50s is thought to have been a Duke Of Edinburgh Award Scheme assessor, while the second was a walker; it is not known which of the two were carrying a selfie stick.

Selfie sticks are extendable poles that can be used to take ‘selfie’ photographs of the holder using a mobile phone.

Of the two men injured in the same storm, one has left hospital after suffering temporary paralysis caused by the lightning, while the fourth victim is still being treated for burns at Morriston Hospital in Swansea.
