Sen. Girdler injured in traffic accident in Science Hill

Dec. 19—Kentucky State Senator Rick Girdler was involved in a car accident Monday night in which he broke his foot.

The accident happened at approximately 9:55 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 27 and Ky. 635 in Science Hill. Girdler said he and his wife Sara were returning from having watched their granddaughter's athletic event in Lincoln County when it occurred.

Rick Girdler said Sara got "the worse end of the deal" suffering injuries to her ribs and leg. She was transported by Somerset-Pulaski County EMS to Lake Cumberland Hospital for treatment of her injuries, while Rick Girdler was taken there for treatment of his own minor injuries.

"I didn't know I broke my foot until I got to the hospital," he said, noting that he's currently wearing a protective boot.

According to the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Dylan West responded to the scene of the accident and discovered that a 2009 GMC pick-up truck operated by Jacob Ware 30, of Science Hill, had collided with the 2019 Toyota SUV driven by Rick Girdler.

A preliminary investigation into the accident showed that the Toyota was southbound on U.S. 27, traveling through the intersection, when it struck the GMC turning left across the southbound lane onto Ky. 635, according to the sheriff's office.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing by Deputy West. The Pulaski County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Science Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Somerset-Pulaski County EMS.

"(EMS) was there lickety-split," said Rick Girdler. "They got (Sara) out of the car and into the ambulance and headed to the hospital real quick."
