It’s been a successful year for singer Solange Knowles. She has toured the world performing her critically acclaimed album A Seat at the Table. Yet, amid the holiday season, she revealed to her fans that she has to cancel an upcoming concert because of a serious health diagnosis.

She took to Instagram and in a candid post revealed she was diagnosed with an autonomic disorder. Although the 31-year-old doesn’t say the exact disorder she is dealing with, she does goes into detail about her struggles with it and canceled her scheduled New Year’s Eve performance at Afropunk Fest in South Africa.

“Wrote, deleted and re wrote this like 5 times…” she wrote. “Still not sure what exactly or how much I want to share… However, it’s so important to me for the people in South Africa, a place that has tremendous meaning to me and that has given me SO SO MUCH, to know why I won’t be performing at Afro Punk this NYE.”

She continues: “The past five months I have been quietly treating, and working through an Autonomic Disorder. It’s been a journey that hasn’t been easy on me,” she wrote. “It’s a complicated diagnosis, and I’m still learning so much myself, but right now, my doctors are not clearing me for such an extended lengthy flight, and doing a rigorous show right after.”

Fans showed the mother of one unconditional support and wrote her messages of hope.

“Hope you get better and come back and bless us please!!!!!!!! Love and light Queen,” said a commenter. “I have POTS/ autonomic dysfunction, as well. It gets better over time the more you learn about the disorder and how to manage it. Thoughts with you as I know it’s a rough experience!”

An autonomic disorder is the breakdown of the autonomic nervous system. People diagnosed with it usually have issues regulating their heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and body temperature. Despite all this, Solange revealed that she has quietly been pushing through and giving her fans her all in recent performances.

The festival also took to Instagram to offer the singer support and assure concertgoers that the situation is out of their control but that the show will go on. Organizers for Afropunk released a statement when the decision was made public.

“It is incredibly important to those of us at AFROPUNK that she recovers and remains in good health. Her music and spirit has been a place of great comfort and inspiration to us as a community.”
