Shameless prison inmates live-stream themselves smoking drugs and using mobile phones

Shocking video footage has shown prisoners live-streaming footage of themselves behind bars, as they smoke drugs, listen to music and use their mobile phones.

The 15-minute clip, captured at HMP Birmingham, was captured via live video app Periscope and viewed thousands of times.

The video, entitled ‘English jail with iPhones smoking Cali’, shows dozen of inmates who are known as the ‘slider gang’ – owing to their matching blue and white striped flip-flops.

Six prisoners are seen lying on a bed while listening to music, while another smokes what appears to be a cannabis joint.

One inmate is heard referring to the joint as ‘Cali’, which is slang for cannabis, while another warns of a nearby guards.

Another group of prisoners are also seen in the messy communal area, while others are seen playing pool and sharing cigarettes.

At one point, the prisoner shooting the video appears to boast of their abilities to get drugs on the inside, remarking ‘we can get big thing, small thing’.

The authenticity of the footage is also shown as one inmate holds a notice from the kitchen staff apologising to prisoners for changing the menu on Tuesday 24 Apri.

‘The menu has now been amended due to work required on kitchen equipment’, the sign reads.

‘This will mean a change to the menu for tea time today. Those who have ordered sausage and pasta bake will now receive sausages and gravy.

‘Sorry for any inconvenience caused.’

As he reads the comments posted by viewers, the prisoner filming the video also threatens to attack one user who said they would ‘snitch’ on the inmates.

Another user, calling themselves meggylove69, asks the prisoner to add them on messenger.

The video comes after a 2016 assessment by the Independent Monitoring Board which said an “urgent” solution was needed to tackle drugs inside the prison.

Last year, 52 per cent of inmates, up from 37 per cent in 2014, said it was ‘easy”’to get drugs at the prison.

In 2016, the prison was also the scene of a riot which lasted for more than 12 hours and destroyed four wings.

Prison director Rob Kellett, said: ‘This behaviour is absolutely unacceptable.

‘Those involved will face disciplinary action and could have time added to their sentence. Our staff work tirelessly to detect, intercept and confiscate contraband.’
