Shang-Chi star Simu Liu has shared a promising update on a second movie, confirming that it is very much still "happening".

The first movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was released back in autumn 2021, and while a sequel was confirmed soon after, updates have been few and far between since.

Liu has now reignited hopes that something is on the horizon in response to a fan on Threads, who expressed their frustration about where things stand.

"I feel like Marvel has abandoned the Shang-Chi fanbase," they wrote. "There has been no effort by the studio to get the sequel filming or even include the character in other Marvel films. Frustrating as hell."

Replying to the post, the actor wrote: "I proooomisse it’s happening."

Last July, Liu shared disappointing news on the sequel, writing on Threads: "Was told it would follow [Avengers 5] but that keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond my control :( hope to have more concrete news to share soon."

However, this week's update comes after director Destin Daniel Cretton, who is set to return for the Shang-Chi sequel, stepped away from Avengers 5 (previously titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) last year, which suggests he may have more time on his hands.

Back in January 2022, Liu opened up about storylines he'd like to see in Shang-Chi 2, telling Complex Canada: "I think just what Shaun decides to do with all this newfound power, you know? It kind of consumed his father, consumed Wenwu.

"I'm curious as to how someone much younger, much more inexperienced, would fare against the rings. Just this idea of all of a sudden being gifted something that's so powerful but also so dangerous."

He added: "And then the other big question I have is, you know, in what way does Shaun fit in with the rest of the MCU? Who are you going to see? What kind of crazy team-ups? What kinda tie-ins, Easter eggs?"
