Shape of Water completely smashed the Oscar nominations

The Shape of Water has completed cleaned up at the nominations for the 90th Academy Awards.

Guillermo del Toro's romance received 12 nods, followed in a (relatively) distant second by Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk with eight.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven, with six for Phantom Thread and Darkest Hour (including Gary Oldman's anticipated Best Actor nomination for playing Winston Churchill).

The Shape of Water was nominated in the following categories: Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (for Sally Hawkins), Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (for Octavia Spencer), Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (for Richard Jenkins), Cinematography, Costume Design, Directing (Guillermo del Toro), Film Editing, Original Score, Best Picture, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Original Screenplay.

Despite its seven nominations, Three Billboards' Martin McDonagh did not get a mention for Best Director – although the Oscars did buck the trend for not including women in the category with Lady Bird's Greta Gerwig. She is the first female director to be nominated since Kathryn Bigelow in 2010 for Hurt Locker (for which she won).

Call Me by Your Name's 22-year-old star Timothée Chalamet is the youngest Best Actor nominee since Mickey Rooney in 1939.

Get Out received a surprising four nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Daniel Kaluuya and Best Director for Jordan Peele.

Meryl Streep (The Post) celebrates her 21st Oscar nomination, with Daniel Day Lewis (Phantom Thread) scoring his sixth.

The Shape of Water was two nominations off the record of 14, which is jointly held by All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land.

The Oscar winners will be announced on March 4.
