Did Sherlock Holmes and John Watson really just solve 'The Final Problem'? Perhaps not...

Sherlock co-writer Steven Moffat has addressed the show's uncertain future in a Facebook post, which has since been shared by fans on social media.

"Re: Sherlock's future - for those of you asking, it's definitely the end. Of Chapter One," Moffat wrote. "Dr Watson is now Doyle's brave widower and Sherlock Holmes has become the wise and humane version of the main run of the stories (we've focused, so far, on the cold Holmes of the early days.)

"Whether we ever get to Chapter Two - our boys consciously living the myth and battling wrong-doers - rather depends on our two stars. I'd be slightly surprised if we never made it again. But I've been surprised before."

He's referring, of course, to the busy schedules of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman...

Cumberbatch is now tied to a multi-picture movie deal with Marvel as Dr Stephen Strange. Freeman, too, is taking the Marvel dollar, with his Captain America: Civil War character Everett K Ross due to reappear in 2018's Black Panther.

Plus - though you might have missed it - he's now attached to a second TV series, the thriller StartUp on streaming service Crackle (it's like a less-famous Netflix).

And that's just the start of it. Louise Brealey (Molly Hooper) is a lead in BBC Three's racy new thriller Clique and, while Moffat will be giving up his showrunner duties on Doctor Who as of 2018, he's spoken of his desire to work on an original project in the near future.

All that taken into account, we could be in for a long wait when it comes to Chapter Two...
