Shocking dashcam footage shows van veer into lorry after driver 'fell asleep at the wheel'

This is the shocking moment a driver ploughs into the back of a lorry on a dual carriageway after apparently ‘falling asleep at the wheel’.

Dashcam footage from another vehicle shows the white Volkswagen van drift across lanes before hitting the lorry, bouncing off and spinning into the central reservation before rolling onto its side.

Despite the dramatic crash, the driver escaped with only a few cuts.

The footage was captured by witness Dan Davies, 44, as he drove along the A14 in Northamptonshire at around 7pm on May 10.

It shows the van drift across from the left lane before straddling the two lanes between junction two and junction one of the westbound A14.

The van can be seen approaching a lorry in the slow lane before smashing into the corner of it then skidding across both lanes into the central reservation.

Mr Davies, an operations manager from Cheshire, said he and other motorists pulled the driver out of the van who was fine apart from some cuts and shock.

He said: “I was just shocked to watch it happen, you could see something was not right as I approached.

“The guy didn’t have a clue when I found him stood up in his van – he just looked like he had woken up from a dream. He just fell asleep he said.

“The driver of the lorry stopped, he did well to control his load.”

The crash caused three hours of tailbacks, Mr Davies said.

A Northamptonshire Police spokeswoman said: “We were called at 7.15pm on May 10 to a collision between a van and a lorry. It was westbound between 2 and 1 near Welford. One person was treated for minor injuries.”

Police said no arrests were made.
