Shop front pulled down as CCTV emerges of building collapse

A shop which collapsed in Anfield covering a road with bricks and debris, has been partially pulled down.

The moment part of the derelict building collapsed was caught on CCTV. Emergency services were called to Oakfield Road in Anfield yesterday afternoon, Thursday May 9, following reports of the collapse of the derelict barber shop, located next to the Morrisons Daily petrol station.

Bricks and debris covered the pavement below, and the road was cordoned off between the petrol station and Hawkesworth Street. The collapse was caught on video showing chunks of masonry suddenly falling to the ground, kicking up a dust cloud.

Drivers approaching Anfield Stadium were diverted down Hawkesworth Street, while cars coming the other way were turned around at the junction of Oakfield Road, Walton Breck Road and Wylva Road. Bus services were also affected.

Merseyside Police told motorists to avoid the area while officers remained at the scene throughout the afternoon, taking pictures of the damage. One officer said a structural engineer would be called in to assess the building.

One resident said he had lived on the street for seven years, and that the former barber shop had been abandoned since he moved in. Another woman, who works in the area, said: “It’s lucky it wasn’t a match day, because it’s absolutely heaving out here. It could’ve killed somebody."

This morning the shop sits in a sorry state, with its interior on show. The walkway past the building has been closed off to the public as debris and bricks remain crumbled on the pavement next to derelict site. The ECHO understands the building is set to be demolished.
