Police said the incident is believed to have happened following an altercation with a customer, who is known to the victim, over a mobile phone. One local shopkeeper an ECHO reporter spoke to said the victim is "the nicest guy in the area".

He said: "He’s my friend, I’ve known him years. He is quiet, a family man with kids. He does his job and goes home. I am very upset about this."

An investigation is underway and witness, forensic and CCTV enquiries are being carried out in the local area. Merseyside Police issued an image of a man who they believe could assist with their investigation.
