Siemens wins £44.7 million Edinburgh Tram contract extension

Siemens Mobility, in a joint consortium with Bilfinger UK, has been awarded an 11-year contract extension for the maintenance of Edinburgh Trams infrastructure to 2035.

This includes the continuous maintenance of the overhead contact line system, the track and signalling system of the tram infrastructure network.

Sambit Banerjee, joint chief executive at Siemens Mobility, said: “We have operated in close collaboration with Edinburgh Trams, including the network extension, and we are delighted to be partnering with them for another 11 years.

“This is a real testament to the team who have worked so hard over the last 10 years to offer the best service to maintain the tram infrastructure in Edinburgh.”

The £44.7m contract extension will continue to support around 22 jobs across Siemens Mobility in Edinburgh, with some new roles, including additional technicians and apprenticeship roles expected to be created.

Siemens Mobility has been maintaining the tram infrastructure in the capital since 2014 and played an instrumental role in the recently-opened extension of the network to Newhaven.

As well as maintaining the infrastructure for Edinburgh Trams, Siemens Mobility has a wider presence in Scotland, employing more than 250 people, working on projects like upgrading signalling technology at places like Carstairs and the new Inverness Airport Railway Station. The company also maintains ScotRail’s Class 380 trains, which operate on routes from Ayrshire to Glasgow, Edinburgh and beyond.

Separately, contractor Graham has been re-elected to the University of Glasgow framework to deliver projects valued in excess of £7m over the next six years.

Works will include the construction of new build projects and refurbishments across the university’s estate, encompassing offices, student accommodation, laboratories and teaching spaces.

The company has previously worked on projects such as the Kelvin Data Centre, Small Animal Hospital, West Medical Building, the Davidson Building, the Mathematics and Statistics building, and enabling works for the expansion of the Western Campus.

James House, construction director and framework lead at Graham Building North, said: “The university has an ambitious vision to enhance its already world-class campus and Graham’s expertise and understanding of working in complex, live environments will help to bring this to life.

“We now look forward to collaborating with their team and modernising the university estate for the benefit of staff and students.”
