A SINKHOLE which recently opened on a road in Somerset needs is currently being filled in by Somerset Council.

The hole, located on the side of the B3134 Burrington Road, in Burrington, between Cheddar and Blagdon, was cordoned off in April ahead of a road closure which is now in effect.

Until 5pm on Friday, May 3, the road will remain inaccessible between Yoxter crossroads and the Nordrach Lane junction.

Somerset Council says the hole will be filled with material before the road is reopened.

A spokesperson added: "This was reported a couple of weeks ago and was cordoned off.

"We are in the process of establishing the cause – we won’t know that until it’s fully excavated.

"A common course is water penetration so it would be a simple case of filling the hole."

The road is regularly inspected for the risk of sinkholes, and the council affirmed it will be fully checked again before being reopened to vehicles.
