The Sinner season 2: Everything you need to know

From Digital Spy

The Sinner got everyone talking when it landed on Netflix in the UK in November, with its compelling central mystery – a mother (Jessica Biel) kills a stranger, with absolutely no idea as to what compelled her to commit the crime – leading to major binge-sessions and plenty of social-media conversation from fans.

The show was originally broadcast in America on the USA Network, where (increasing) millions of viewers tuned in every week to catch the latest big reveal.

But it wasn't just a hit with streaming and trash-telly audiences, it was a hit with critics – we loved it, even if we did have a couple of questions about one of the twists.

It was even nominated for a couple of Golden Globes – 'Best Miniseries or Television Film' and 'Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film' for Jessica Biel.

So, a second season should be inevitable, right? The only problem is, the central premise is fairly limited, with the storyline very much resolved...

The Sinner season 2: Is it happening?

But, thanks to the fact that The Sinner was such a huge success, talk quickly turned to how to expand on the original premise.

"We are really hoping to hear soon if we get to come back or not," Jessica Biel revealed in December last year. "Initially, the show was genuinely conceived as a limited series so it was a surprise to us as well that, with the amazing viewership and the incredible journey that this show has taken, it was even a possibility to come back."

By March of 2018, the show's return was officially confirmed - but, as ever with this series, not everything is as it appears...

The Sinner season 2 release date: When will it air?

The Sinner season one may have landed on Netflix UK in November of last year, but it was originally broadcast between August and September in the States.

With season two greenlit in early 2018, it's possible that the series could return to US screens by late 2018 (and given the show's surprise success, we imagine that a global release on Netflix will follow rather more quickly this time around).

Neither USA or Netflix has officially confirmed a return date for The Sinner yet, though

The Sinner season 2 cast: Who will be in it?

If you've seen season one, you'll know the story is pretty tightly wrapped up, to the extent that it's more or less impossible to bring back all of the original cast.

Bill Pullman has been confirmed to return as Detective Harry Ambrose, this time investigating the murder of an 11-year-old boy.

The official for season two synopsis reads: "As Ambrose realises there's nothing ordinary about the boy or where he came from, the investigation pulls him into the hidden darkness of his hometown.

"He's pitted against those who'll stop at nothing to protect its secrets - and a mysterious woman who proves to be a complicated, enigmatic piece to this haunting puzzle."

But what about Jessica Biel? While she'll still be involved as an executive producer, it's unclear if she'll appear on-screen. "I will definitely be involved in some way!" Biel has said. "I hope somebody writes me into the show, if we can figure it out.

"We will figure it out if it's possible, but we want to be authentic to the show. We want to do what's right for the show as opposed to what's right for me."

"The Sinner was a huge success for USA Network," said channel president Chris McCumber. "In our second season, we'll follow Detective Ambrose as he tracks his newest 'why-dunnit,' while staying true to the unique, edge-of-your-seat storytelling that captivated audiences and critics alike."

It sounds like we can expect a whole bunch of new twists... but it remains to be seen if a shock reappearance from Biel will be among them.
