Smelling This Fungus Can Give Women Spontaneous Orgasms

It’s a member of the ‘stinkhorn’ family

Is there really a fungus which gives women spontaneous orgasms from sniffing it?

Apparently so - and even more weirdly, men experience no effects from it whatsoever.

Researcher John Halliday told IFL Science this week that he and colleagues had heard of a weird fungus growing on lava flows in Hawaii, which was rumoured to bring women to climax.

He and colleagues boarded a plane to find out, back in 2001 - and tested it with 16 women, six of whom had orgasms.

The men simply said that the ‘shroom smelt ‘fetid’ - it’s a relative of a mushroom which grows wild in Britain, and which smells of rotting flesh.

Halliday and his colleagues concluded that the ‘hormone-like compounds present [...] may have some similarity to human neurotransmitters released during sexual encounters.’

Perhaps the oddest part of all is that no one has ever travelled back to repeat the experiment since. Do scientists have no sense of adventure?
