New Snail Species Named for TV Wildlife Educator Robert Irwin

The Australia Zoo released photos showing a newly discovered snail species, which the Queensland Museum and Australian Museum have named after wildlife conservationist and TV personality Robert Irwin.

According to an Australia Zoo press release, Robert Irwin’s banded snail, or Figuladra robertirwini, is among four newly discovered species identified from the Figuladra group of snails through DNA testing.

“I am incredibly thrilled and honored to have a new species of snail named after me. This recognition is so meaningful and I hope to draw attention to the importance of protecting all species, even those on a much smaller scale,” Irwin said.

This group of snails inhabits an area stretching from north of the Mary River in southeast Queensland to the south of the O’Connell River in north Queensland. Credit: Australia Zoo via Storyful
