Snow Warning For Drivers As Cold Snap Hits UK

Snow has been causing treacherous driving conditions in parts of the UK - on a weekend in which temperatures have plunged to below freezing.

Overnight on Saturday the temperature in Topcliffe, North Yorkshire, dropped to -6C, while -5.6C was recorded in Benson, south Oxfordshire.

Parts of the UK saw a flurry of snow on Saturday, bringing a sharp end to what has so far been the second mildest November on record.

Snow fell as far south as Eastbourne and East Sussex, with areas in Scotland, Wales, northern England and the Midlands also hit.

According to North Yorkshire Police dangerous weather conditions have forced the closure of the the A169 between Whitby and Pickering.

North Yorkshire and Cumbria police issued warnings to drivers to take care on the road as the snow settled.

Forecasters said further snow showers were less likely on Sunday but a widespread frost is expected in most places overnight.

The cold spell will die away from Monday, with warmer weather and rain spreading east.

Gritters have been on the roads, with highways bosses having stockpiled 1.2 million tonnes of salt - leaving half of the country's councils at the limit of their storage capacity.
