Remember when flipping your Nokia open was cool?

Yeah, we can barely recall it either. But Nokia wants you to get nostalgic for your early noughties favourite again. And with its new flagship smartphone Nokia 8, its looking to snag a piece of Apple and Samsung's dominance over the market.

Rolling out in September, its specs are typical for a top-tier smartphone – a 7.9mm-thick all-aluminium body offered in a number of colours. The kicker is a new feature it's calling the 'Bothie'. With the phone's "Dual-Sight" functionality – using two cameras at once, effectively – you can simultaneously shoot a front and rear-facing image or video.

More importantly, the instant Facebook Live and YouTube Live streaming capabilities will apparently be a world-first. The phone will also feature OZO sound, which combines three microphones to capture immersive 360-degree surround audio.

Priced at €599 for Europe (no UK cost yet, but that converts to £549), the Nokia 8 is a bit more expensive than previous models from the company aimed at the low-end smartphone market.

"We think with the Nokia brand and the combination of industry-leading performance as well as immersive and innovative consumer experience, we will be immediately able to make a mark in the high-end segment," Florian Seiche, acting chief executive of Nokia phone maker HMD Global, told CNBC.

Each 3310 came preloaded with the throwback classic, Snake, too, so the Bothie has some BIG shoes to fill…
