Sofía Vergara Is Not to Be Messed with as Savvy Colombian Drug Cartel Leader in Netflix's 'Griselda'
The actress tackles what may be her most dramatic role yet in Netflix's dark limited series, premiering Jan. 25
Sofía Vergara is tackling what may be her most dramatic role yet.
The Modern Family actress, 51, portrays Colombian drug cartel leader Griselda Blanco in the upcoming Netflix limited series Griselda, debuting Jan. 25 on Netflix.
From the minds of Narcos and Narcos: Mexico creators Eric Newman and Andrés Baiz, the six-episode series is inspired by the life of Griselda Blanco, the creator of one of the most profitable drug cartels in history.
By the mid-1970s, her organization was moving 300 kilos of cocaine a month, worth about $80 million, and Blanco herself is estimated to have been responsible for the deaths of dozens of people, if not more. Her charm and savagery helped her earn the nickname "The Cocaine Godmother."
In the brief, 36-second first teaser for the Netflix series, a car slowly drives by before the scene cuts to a group of men sitting, staring in silence and listening.
"You've thought a lot about me, haven't you?" Griselda says offscreen. "I've heard that you liked my product. We can make a lot of money together."

Peppered throughout her comments are brief moments revealing drugs being moved, a man snorting cocaine and bags of cash.
"Who is the one in charge?" asks one man.
Finally, Griselda herself is revealed, quietly glaring, before the teaser cuts to the show's title and the ominous background music crescendoes.
Griselda’s cast features Alberto Guerra as Dario Sepúlveda, Christian Tappan as Arturo Mesa, Martín Rodríguez as Rivi Ayala, Juliana Aidén Martinez as June Hawkins and Vanessa Ferlito as Carmen Gutiérrez.
Guest stars include Carolina Giraldo aka Karol G playing Carla, Fredy Yate as Chucho Castro, Paulina Dávila as Isabel, with José Zúñiga as Amilcar and Camilo Jiménez Varón as Rafa Salazar.
In addition to starring in the series, Vergara is also executive producing the show.
